Economic History and Regional Economies

The economic history and regional economies area consists of three research units: economic history, regional economies, and economic culture & information.

  1. The economic history research unit studies past economies and economic events as well as changes in the economy. Both these streams involve situating economies within the historical context of related political, social, cultural and environmental forces. This unit also includes labor and demographic histories.
  2. The regional economies unit investigates sub-national, national and transnational economic entities using empirical methods. Areas of specialization in the Department include East Asia, especially Japan and China, as well as South Asia, West Asia and Africa.
  3. The culture and information research unit in the Economics Department offers a range of courses focusing on culture and languages of wider circulation with the aim of broadening social scientific perspectives.
